The day Tour de Yorkshire came to town

We had a great day at the shop last weekend for Tour de Yorkshire! The day dawned with grey skies and a chilly wind but at least it was not raining!

We made sure we had several AGA's switched on inside the shop as standing by a warm and cosy AGA was going to be a winner given the chill outside (and we weren't wrong!)

We had freshly baked chocolate muffins and bags of homemade biscuits for sale along with tea, coffee and squash. We set up a table at the front of the shop with all our wares displayed.

One of our first visitors was a Dutch cycling enthusiast who came in for directions. He was apparently cycling the route in advance but seemed to have got a bit confused with the signage and where to head next. With the help of our office map we soon had him on the right track! He joked that he was one of the competitors and was currently in the lead.

We then had a steady stream of visitors throughout the day, both before and after the race. For the duration of the race being in Norton we actually closed the shop and all went outside to watch the spectacle. It was an amazing sight, the cyclists were traveling very fast and so close together. The different colours of their jackets made a really strong visual impact, like a load of different coloured paint pots being spilled out over a page. Norton high street was buzzing, alive with locals and visitors alike cheering and waving. We felt very lucky to be involved with such an event and having it pass so close to the shop was a real bonus.

We had all donned our yellow Tour de Yorkshire t-shirts for the day and were thrilled when Ray King, Northon's Mayor popped in. We even got a picture of him with a blue bicycle stencilled into his hair! 

The really important part of the day for us however was selling our goodies to raise money for the Jenny Unwin Appeal. People were very generous (and hungry). All our chocolate muffins went as did most of the biscuits. As it was such a cold day the lure of a cup of tea and a sit by an AGA was irresistible and we were thrilled to have raised £45 for Jenny's appeal.

A big thank you to everybody that helped both us and Norton to make such a success out of the day the Tour de Yorkshire came to town.

All that remains now is to get a very woolly Eric the horse out of the library and back into his stable at Malton equine laundry!

Eric the horse has been completely kitted out ready for Tour de Yorkshire passing by Malton tomorrow.

Here is is at Norton Library being wool bombed in Tour de Yorkshire colours!

He has a lovely knitted mane and knitted bandages with a knitted head collar with knitted Yorkshire rosette.

He's never looked so beautiful! 

Spring Entertaining

We had a full house for our Spring Entertaining cookery demonstration.

Guests were greeted with fresh coffee and homemade Whittington biscuits (from the AGA National Trust recipe book). Customers then took their seats and watched two starters, two main courses and two puddings evolve in front of their eyes.

Alison started with a salmon and avadado terrine. Not only would this make a delicious starter for a dinner party, but it would also be a good lunch dish, served with a green salad and crispy bread.

Next up was a light and flavoursome rice and Parmesan tart. The pastry for this tart was short and crisp with a definite taste of Parmesan. The filling was light and delicate, almost fluffy in texture. Served with a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc made an excellent combination.

For the main course we started with chicken breasts poached in stock, served with a green vegetable broth and accompanied by a herbed cream sauce. This not only tasted delicious but was also healthy (even the herbed cream was made with creme fraiche!)

The other main course was a barbequed pork fillet with a Vietnamese caramel sauce. The fillets of pork were cooked on the roasting floor, so no nasty cooking smells and the accompanying sticky sauce and rice made this a tasty and filling dish. 

For those that were still hungry there were two unusual puddings. One was a lime and mango meringue. With light pastry cases and perfectly cooked meringues, these little treats showed that limes and mangoes are suitable companions.

The second dish of almond and orange syrup cake was served with an amazing Limoncello based semi freddo that balanced the sweetness of the cake beautifully.

We finished lunch and discussing recipes around 2.30pm so it was a pretty busy and tasty morning!

Tour de Yorkshire

We have been going Tour de Yorkshire mad here at Country Warmth. If it moves (even if it doesn't!) it has been painted blue and yellow!

We started by visiting the local tip and with permission got some deceased bicycles! These painted up really well and provided us with a variety of sizes for our display. We have chained our bikes to posts near the front of the shop, however that didn't stop Friday night's post pub attendees cutting a small bike free and attempting to ride it home..! Firstly the bike was small so there must have been some knee knocking on chins going on. Secondly, judging by the lack of paint left on the seat, whoever pinched it will have a blue pattern on the bottom of their trousers! Anyway, the errant bike progress was tracked moving around Norton until our member of staff Sam kindly retrieved it from making further progress down the Scarborough Road.

We have also painted an AGA in the same livery. That too will be positioned outside the shop. We would be amazed if 400kg of cast iron goes wandering around Norton when the pubs close this weekend - but hey, watch this space!

Our plans for the race day include making and selling biscuits, in the shape of bicycle wheels of course! We will sell these homemade biscuits for 50p with the proceeds going to the Jenny Unwin Appeal.

In keeping with the decorated shop with blue and yellow bunting, we have embellished Tour de Yorkshire T Shirts. We have even commissioned our own 'Mrs Madden Makes' blue and yellow aprons.
