Middleton Hunt Bake Off
We recently attended the Middleton Hunt Bake Off. Michael was a co judge along with Aunty Nora, Caroline and Jill.
The competition was for the best roulade and was divided into 'Boys' and 'Girls' sections. What a task this proved to be. As per usual the standard was high. It was made all the more tricky as some roulades were meringue and others were sponge based. All flavours, sizes and textures abounded.
The judges took their job very seriously and decided three marks would be awarded for each roulade. The first mark was for appearance and presentation. This was not a difficult section to make up some good marks - pretty decoration and presentation on an appropriate sized and styled platter gives easy points (top tip for next years competitors - no plastic torn plates or foil trays!)
Secondly was the technical mark. This covered the texture and 'roll' of the roulade, particularly noted when a slice was cut. Finally all the roulades were marked for taste. The judges felt that after tasting 20 roulades they were at least a few pounds heavier!
Both sections were a close run between first and second. A red velvet roulade being a particular stunning winner of the ladies section. The gents was equally close but with Tom's one handed effort just getting the edge with its presentation mark.
The Booby prize went to a bit of a disastrous Swiss roll masquerading as a roulade!! All the roulades were then consumed as a pudding by everybody.
Country Warmth supplied the winners of each section with personalised aprons, hand made by Bev Madden of Mrs Madden Makes as well as a little gift for the Booby prize and some of the lovely new "Top Dog' AGA oven gloves for the raffle.
A great time was had by all with a generous raffle and an absolutely delicious supper cooked by our kind host Venetia Wrigley. A big thanks to Sue and Venetia and all that helped make the night such a success.

Ladies Night
We had a super evening courtesy of The Durham Ox at Crayke near Easingwold last night.
Over 80 ladies converged in the function room at the pretty village inn for a special Ladies Night. We were welcomed by warming outdoor braziers - ideal for an unseasonably chilly evening (still very much AGA weather!)
Sparkling glasses filled with Prosecco greeted us and delicious canapes were served to feed the hungry shoppers!
Our little pink AGA City60 stood smartly amongst some equally well dressed ladies and proved to be a good talking point. Gathering interest from many traditional AGA followers, that had no idea we now have a 60cm model that you can switch on and off but still get the benefit of cast iron range cooking.
Also attending the evening was Jojo Bradley Upholstery. Jojo was returning to familiar territory and bought with her a delightful range of gifts and textiles, plus examples of the top quality workmanship you can expect from her upholstered furniture. We lightened Jojo's stock of a stunning pair of salad servers in anticipation of ever having some salad eating weather!
Lovable Lampshades was another stunning stand presented by Sarah Hall. One day we shall have one of her quirky original designs!
A huge thanks must go to Sasha Ibbotson and her events team, ably lead by the lovely Chloe Burns for organising such a super event and to all the lovely ladies we met last night.

Seafood and Vegetarian Cookery Demonstration
This cookery demonstration went down a treat with our guests!
Claire started with her courgette, cheese and herb pesto tear and share bread. The dough was prepared and left to prove near the AGA - a job the AGA does so well! Once proved and baked this was served with olives and artichokes drizzled with oil infused with chilli, cloves and cinnamon. A delicious starter to share around the table.
Alison then went to work on the crab salad. This consisted of brown crab combined with a mild homemade curried mayonnaise and some white wine shallots. This was served with freshly chopped fennel and apple on rye crackers. It was a delicious seafood dish perfect as a starter for dinner parties or even a smart picnic.
Claire then made the mushroom encroute. Mushrooms, nuts, garlic and soy sauce all encased in a light puffy pastry case provided a substantial dish. This was served with Claire's homemade onion relish and a green salad.
Next on the menu was Thai salmon noisettes. These were salmon steaks wrapped around a Thai paste. The flavours of ginger, lime and garlic then permeated the salmon during the cooking process. They were served with a lemon grass coconut and sweet chilli broth and saffron rice and a radish bean and potato salad.
For pudding the colourful mille feuilles were served with a raspberry, cream, marscapone and vanilla filling served with a summer berry coulis and a dusting of raspberry sherbutt.
Then to finish, Alison created a yoghurt and pistachio torte with a pistachio and almond base served with mango and passion fruit salad.
This was enjoyed with a glass of sparkling rose wine, or elderflower cordial for those driving!
Another successful cookery demonstration held in our upstairs cookery school.
Claire and Alison now get to have a break from cooking up some lovely menus whilst we head out to the agricultural shows over the summer. However, we shall be back with some more dates for the autumn. Please contact us or join our mailing list if you would like to be advised of the autumn and winter demonstrations.
