Malton Food Lovers Festival

Last Friday was given over to building a cookery theatre at The Milton Rooms in Malton. This was to be one of the main attractions at The Malton Food Festival. We had supplied a handsome cream Falcon 1000 deluxe Dual Fuel cooker for the event.

On Saturday morning the festival opened under grey skies and drizzling conditions. However, the weather did little to dampen our spirits and the cookery theatre provided some top class cookery demonstrations with seats for over 200 people to watch and question the celebrity chefs cooking their favourite dishes.

The line up was impressive and included Yorks' Masterchef finalist Sara Danesin Medio, Michelin Star awarded chef Jean-Christophe Novelli, Andrew Pern from The Star Harome and York, The Chiappa Sisters, James Mackenzie, Stephanie Moon and The Incredible Spice Men.

Many of the chefs then decamped over to the recently opened Malton Cook School in nearby Saville Street to tutor groups of students on a more personal level. There was much interest in the new school with people signing up for courses taking place throughout the year.

We were thrilled as we have lent the cookery school four new cream Falcon continental cookers. They are cookers with exceptional pedigree, being used in both professional kitchens and commercial restaurants. They are well engineered cookers mixing style and function well.

We also took the Country Warmth show trailer with the latest Aqua coloured AGA on display. Plus the new range of iconic textiles. Along with a full compliment of Mrs Madden's Aprons. We had lots of visitors to the stand and we enjoyed a busy if not damp weekend.

There were hundreds of stands selling all sorts of delicious goodies. Some of our favourites were lobster from 'What a Catch' and some awesome pickles and preserves from Erica Jane.

There was vodka, beer of all varieties, cakes, breads, sausages, delicious homemade burgers and much much more!

We are very proud to be involved in the Malton Food Festival and are grateful to all those involved both in Maton and further afield. Most people involved in the show give their time and energy for free! It's a superb festival and we look forward to next year!

Beginners Guide to AGA Cooking

We have been busy with AGA cookery demonstrations recently - with events at all levels and on varying appliances for our customers.

Last week saw 20 people join us for our regular 'Beginners Guide to AGA Cooking'. This is an evening demonstration, free of charge and perfect for people considering buying an AGA or those who have moved into a house with an AGA already installed.

The demonstration lasts just over an hour and covers the basics such as roast, grill, bake, fry, boil, steam, poach and toast. Alison - our resident chef also throws in top tips and tricks that the AGA can perform effortlessly.

These evenings are informal, educational and fun. The next one is on Monday 14th July. If you would like to attend please contact us to reserve your seat.

Real Bread Maker Week

Did you know this week is Real Bread Maker Week?

The event aims to get people baking or buying their bread from local, independent bakeries where it's freshly made each day.

To celebrate we thought we'd share this delicious recipe for soda bread - why not give it a go?

Ingredients
450g plain flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp salt
55g pumpkin seeds
25g linseed or sesame seeds
55g sunflower seeds
Approx 400ml buttermilk

Serves 4

Method
Sieve the flour with the bicarbonate of soda and salt. Then add the seeds. Make a well in the centre and add most of the milk.
Working quickly, mix to a softish dough. When it forms a ball, turn it on to a well-floured surface and lightly work into a flattened loaf.
Place on a rectangle of Bake-O-Glide lightly dusted with flour and use a sharp knife to cut a deep cross in the top.

2,3 and 4 Oven AGA
Bake on the grid shelf placed on the floor of the roasting oven for 30-35 minutes or until the bread is golden and cooked through. Tip: If made into scones, reduce the cooking time to 10-15 minutes.

Conventional Cooking
Bake at 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6 for 35 minutes or until the bread is golden and cooked through.

Sending our Apologies

Dear customers,

We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused in regards to our latest AGA special offers.

We accidentally sent out a batch of envelopes with the wrong postage - meaning not all customers received the information. We used a different envelope size, unaware that the postage rules have changed.

As a way of making amends we have made a large donation to 'Walk the Walk' uniting against breast cancer. Sam, a member of our team is taking part in the 26 mile walk tomorrow.

We hope you find this action acceptable and feel we have handled our error properly. If you have any concerns or would like to talk to us please call Michael or pop into the shop next time you are passing.

Have a lovely weekend and we send our best wishes to Sam.
